SUMMARY: New Teaching Block

Freeman Beesley were appointed by the Design and Build Contractor to work with the specialist sub-contractors to develop the original concept into a full design and ultimately a finished building.

The building is naturally ventilated with thermal mass provided by exposed concrete soffits. Three storeys of teaching rooms open onto a central atrium with automatic opening lanterns at roof level. Ventilation is driven by a combination of cross-ventilation and stack effect. A noisy main road required special acoustic treatment of the ventilation openings. There is a commercial kitchen and refectory on the ground floor.

Our role included detailed energy modelling of the building together with sun-path analysis and internal lighting studies.

The building achieved a BREEAM rating of EXCELLENT.
